A five-act tragedy by Italian playwright Vittorio Alfieri, first published in 1783. Set in ancient Rome, it dramatizes the fate of Emperor Nero's first wife, Octavia, daughter of Emperor Claudius. Disliked by Nero and targeted by his new love Poppea and advisor Tigellinus, Octavia is falsely accused and ultimately driven to suicide to escape infamy and execution. The play explores themes of tyranny, political intrigue, innocence vs. vice, and the struggle for personal dignity in the face of absolute power.
